Calendar Matters
Calendars
To find out about faith festivals and check that events being
planned by your organisation do not clash with one of the key
festivals and fasts of a group that you are hoping to involve, look at
the Shap Calendar
which has been a standard reference guide for many.
or sites such as the
BBC
Religions and Ethics Calendar.
Many local inter faith bodies and local authorities now also produce
their own calendars. See for example
Burnley Borough Council’s
calendar
Marking and celebrating festivals
Local inter faith organisations often highlight faith
festivals in some way. For example, there may be special events to
learn more about these.
Sometimes members may be invited to share in celebrations at local
places of worship or in events linked to festivities. There are
valuable opportunities to learn more about each others’ beliefs and
communities.
It is important, however, that members are enabled to participate in
ways which are appropriate to both the host community and the guests,
with which both are comfortable, and which do not put guests into the
position of having to take part in religious ritual based on
particular beliefs which they may not share.
Download The Inter Faith Guide for more information about calendars
and also about the importance of scheduling events and meetings so
these take into account the religious obligations of members.
