Volunteers and staff
Volunteers
The majority of local inter faith bodies are established and run
wholly on a voluntary basis. That is to say, those involved give their
time and skills with no payment and are therefore ‘volunteers’ even if
they would not normally think of that term in relation to their work.
It can be helpful, however, to remember that a body is receiving this
gift and for there to be occasions where people are thanked for what
they do.
Staff
Some local inter faith bodies employ a part
time worker to help respond to the growing number of requests for
involvement from local authorities, LSPs, schools, hospitals, police,
fire service and other bodies. A few have a full time staff member to
help with their programme.
Where there are paid workers careful
thought needs to be given to how they will be recruited and how their
work will be managed and supported and how their role will be defined
in relation to the kinds of activities carried out by the trustees in
a voluntary capacity.
To recruit and pay staff is to enter into the world of small voluntary
organisations with some significant legal requirements. It is
important to be aware of these and to ensure that any management
committee is aware of its obligations and liabilities and complies
with all relevant legislation.
For further information see
The Local Inter Faith Guide and the
publications related to running small voluntary organisations listed
under "Resources: Publications" at the end of the Guide.
